Unbeaten Curlin, the morning line favorite for Saturday's $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park, emerged as a slight favorite over juvenile champion Street Sense and Florida Derby (GI) winner Scat Daddy as betting on the third and final pool of Churchill Downs' 2007 Kentucky Derby Future Wager ("KDFW") reached its midway point.
Owned by a partnership that includes Stonestreet Farm, Padua Stable, George Bolton and Midnight Cry Stable, the 3-year-old son of Smart Strike stood as the 6-1 fan's choice at the end of Friday's second day of wagering in the four-day pool. The Steve Asmussen-trained colt, a 12-length winner in his racing debut at Gulfstream Park and an easy winner in Oaklawn Park's Rebel (GIII) in his next outing, had been a 12-1 shot at the end of Thursday's opening day of wagering in Pool 3. Florida Derby (GI) winner Scat Daddy and Street Sense, the morning line favorite for Saturday's $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass (GI) at Keeneland, were co-second choices at 7-1 - although slightly more money had been wagered on Scat Daddy. Santa Anita Derby (GI) winner Tiago, Wood Memorial (GI) winner Nobiz Like Shobiz, Louisiana Derby (GII) winner Circular Quay and Lane's End (GII) winner Hard Spun were co-third choices at 10-1.
Also attracting solid support in Friday's Pool 3 betting were Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) runner-up Any Given Saturday (13-1), Illinois Derby (GII) and Gotham (GIII) winner Cowtown Cat (15-1), and Robert B. Lewis (GII) winner Great Hunter (17-1). The mutuel field, or "all other 3-year-olds," stood at odds of 19-1.
A total of $49,457 had been wagered in KDFW Pool 3 when betting concluded for the day on Friday evening. Betting is scheduled to resume on Saturday at noon (al times EDT). Wagering in the pool will conclude on Sunday at 6 p.m.
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager allows racing fans to wager on contenders for the 133rd Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands at odds that could be significantly better than those they would receive on the day of the race. The wager is a $2 minimum bet and a win wager only. There are no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager and winning payouts on Kentucky Derby Day will be based on the odds that are in place at the conclusion of each of the three KDFW pools.
The 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 5 at Churchill Downs. Information and real-time odds on the Kentucky Derby Future Wager are available at the official Kentucky Derby Web site at www.kentuckyderby.com . |
