Tickets for the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks are broken down into general admission and reserved seating. General admission "seating" is located in the infield, or the grass field inside of the racetrack. There are no advance sales for general admission tickets, therefore tickets are sold on the day of the race on a first-come, first-serve basis. Because the infield is standing room only and offers no view of the track, it generally has more of a party atmosphere, with people wearing crazy hats and beads, and drinking numerous mint juleps. Prices for general admission tickets are $40 for the Kentucky Derby, and $25 for the Kentucky Oaks.

Reserved seating tickets can only be obtained through an application process. The deadline for applicants for 2007 tickets was September 1st, 2006 and consequently reserved tickets are sold out. The only way to apply for tickets is online, through Churchill Downs' Twin Spires Club. The club was created as a way for Churchill Downs to reward loyal customers, and is based upon a points system. The more points a person earns, the better their chance is to receive tickets for future Derby races. The best way to earn points and prove customer loyalty is to use a Twin Spires Club card to visit Churchill Downs, Trackside OTB or any other related tracks or OTB locations throughout the country.

While it is not necessary to have Twin Spires Club points to receive reserved seating tickets, it is recommended. Showing sustained interest over time through a club membership is one other way to secure tickets.
