J. Paul Reddam's Notional, winner of the Risen Star (Grade III) at the Fair Grounds and runner-up in the Florida Derby (GI), suffered a leg injury during a Saturday gallop that knocked the colt off the road to the 133rd running of the $2 million-guaranteed Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (GI). Trainer Doug O'Neill confirmed the injury to Churchill Downs officials by telephone on Saturday evening and wagering was suspended on Notional (#14) in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager ("KDFW"), which runs through Sunday at 6 p.m. (EDT).
Notional was injured during what O'Neill described as a routine gallop over Polytrack on Saturday at Keeneland. Notional was scheduled to undergo surgery on Sunday to repair a fracture to his left front ankle.
"He's officially out," said O'Neill. "He fractured his front left ankle this morning. He just galloped and came back and didn't cool out very well. As the morning went on he started getting a little filling in that ankle and they X-rayed it and, lo and behold, they saw a fracture."
The injury two notional leaves O'Neill with at least two major candidates for the Kentucky Derby. Reddam's Great Hunter, a troubled fifth in the blanket finish in Saturday's Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (GI) at Keeneland, and Liquidity, fourth in his most recent outing in the Santa Anita Derby (GI), remain on the Derby Trail for O'Neill. The status of Merv Griffin's Cobalt Blue, another O'Neill-trained Derby hopeful, is being reviewed following a seventh-place finish as the favorite in last week's Illinois Derby (GII) at Hawthorne Race Course.
The officials rules of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager require that wagering be suspended on any individual wagering interest when it is be determined that the horse has no chance to compete in the Kentucky Derby. There are no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Wagering had been suspended prior to the start of Pool 3 on Birdbirdistheword (#3) when trainer Ken McPeek said his colt was out of the Derby.
The odds on Notional stood at 35-1 when the third of four days of betting on KDFW Pool 3 opened at noon on Saturday. Notional had been a wagering interest in both of this year's earlier Derby Futures pools. He had closed at odds of 22-1 in Pool 2 in March and was a 27-1 risk in Pool 1 in February. |
