Kentucky Derby Glossary

The Kentucky Derby is about to start! Many different factors contribute to the Kentucky Derby experience. First up is the traditional beverage of the Derby for almost a century, the Mint Julep. Made up of sugar, water, Kentucky bourbon whiskey, crushed ice and sprigs of mint, over 80,000 of these cocktails are served every year. While standing in line for your Mint Julep, keep an eye out for one of the many celebrities that frequent the Derby every year. Keeping house in the premium seats on the 4th, 5th, and 6th Floor Clubhouses, otherwise known as Millionaire's Row, these celebrities even include U.S. Presidents and English Royalty!

Run for the RosesIf Millionaire's Row is a little outside of your budget, participate in another tradition by purchasing tickets for the infield. Home to 80,000 fans during the Derby and Oaks, the infield carries an almost Mardi Gras-like atmosphere. While you won't see much of the races except some dust and the silks, or the traditional colors worn by the jockeys, you do get an optimal view of the Twin Spires. Known throughout the world as the landmark that is symbolic to Churchill Downs, the Twin Spires were constructed in 1895 and stand as a monument to horse racing fanatics everywhere. And don't forget the Hat Parade! Ranging from tasteful in the Clubhouse to delightfully tacky in the infield, this is one tradition everyone must adhere to.

The Kentucky Derby Tickets

As everyone prepares for the race and the horses are led onto the track, make sure to sing along to the traditional song of the Derby, "My Old Kentucky Home". And after the race, known as "the greatest two minutes in sports", stick around for the presentation of the Garland of Roses to the winner. Made up of 554 red roses, the official flower of the Derby, the Garland of Roses is what has made the Kentucky Derby known as the "Run for the Roses".
