Slew's Tizzy zipped to the early lead under jockey Robby Albarado and never looked back en route to an unlikely 3 ½-length victory over Starbase in the 26 th running of the $325,000 Coolmore Lexington (Grade 2) at Keeneland.
The 3-year-old son of Tiznow covered the 1 1/16-miles over a "fast" synthetic surface in 1:43.20. The winner was dismissed as the longest shot on the board at odds of $40.50-1 and his backers were afforded payoffs of $83, $29.60, and $13.60. Starbase, the second-longest-shot on the board at odds of 36-1, finished second under rider Corey Lanerie and paid $29.60 and $13. Forty Grams, guided by Garrett Gomez, was another ¾-lengths back in third and paid $5.
Trust Your Luck finished fourth and was followed under the wire by Joe Got Even, Sacrifice Bunt, Soaring By, Boogiemanball, and Belgravia. Belgravia, sent off as the tepid favorite at odds of 9-5, apparently bled during the race; he did not race on the anti-bleeding medication Lasix.
Slew's Tizzy grabbed the early lead and navigated the field through fractions of :23.89 for the first quarter-mile and :48.17 for the first half-mile. Soaring By, piloted by Edgar Prado, mounted his bid on the far turn as Slew's Tizzy clicked off six furlongs in 1:12.41. That bid would not last, however, as Slew's Tizzy reasserted his advantage in the stretch. Forty Grams appeared to make a run at the leader but could not sustain his momentum in the stretch. Slew's Tizzy coasted to victory as Starbase bested Forty Grams for the place spot.
Owned by Joseph Lacombe Stable and trained by Gregory Fox, Slew's Tizzy won for just the second time in his sixth lifetime start. The victory earned him $201,500, boosting his career earnings to $220,252; he had earned just $18,752 before his win in the Lexington. His graded earnings kitty is enough to secure a spot in the Kentucky Derby if he wants it, but his connections have indicated that they will not run him back in two weeks. |
