Saturday's $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass (GI) at Keeneland drew a field of seven that included a few surprises, but that didn't stop oddsmaker Mike Battaglia from making last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (GI) champ a solid 4-5 morning line favorite.
Street Sense drew post four in the seven-horse field, which was expected to have about five horses before entries were drawn Wednesday morning. However, a couple of longshots, Love Dubai and Times Squared, both coming back on very short rest, will take try to make the quick turnaround in an attempt to get into the Kentucky Derby.
Street Sense has been ideally prepped by trainer Carl Nafzger, who has never won this race. At the post position draw, Nafzger discussed the reasoning for using the Blue Grass as his colt's final Derby prep. “We had to eliminate a (track he wouldn't like) and we did that here with the Polytrack.”
Great Hunter figures to give Street Sense his stiffest competition. Great Hunter actually defeated the favorite when those two ran here in the Lane's End Futurity (GI) last autumn. Great Hunter has been training locally and would not be a major upsetter.
Zanjero, trained by Steve Asmussen, has run well all year in graded stakes, but has not been able to get that elusive win. He has had some tough trips in the past few races, and will benefit from the shorter field as he launches his run from the back of the pack.
Dominican is the “now” horse after winning Turfway's Rushaway in very smart style. He's making just his second start of the year, and obviously has an affinity for a Polytrack, breaking his maiden at Keeneland in addition to his win at Turfway.
Teuflesberg just keeps plugging away on the Kentucky Derby trail without getting hardly any mention as a serious candidate for Churchill Downs. He didn't run his race when third in the Rebel (GIII), but has two stakes wins and also broke his maiden at Keeneland. Distance limitations are the big issue with the Jamie Sanders trainee.
The aforementioned longshots Love Dubai and Time Squared are both 30-1 off short rest. Love Dubai was last in the Illinois Derby (GII) last weekend, but has good Polytrack history. Time Squared broke his maiden here just eight days ago, coming with a rush from last after a poor start to win going away. In his lone stakes start, he was seventh in the Sham (GIII).
